The La Liga title race tilted in dramatic fashion as Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 4-0 in November’s El Clásico. Barca captured the lead in the 11th minute on a quick strike from Luis Suarez, who would score two goals on the night. The Catalan side maintained their momentum to the finish.

The two annual Clásico matches, in March and November, are among the most anticipated and watched football events in the world. This time, rivals FC Barcelona and Real Madrid both used Facebook in unique and interesting ways to provide great match-related content to fans worldwide.

Video on Facebook: Live and 360 degrees

Facebook worked with Real Madrid on its first broadcast on Facebook using Live for Mentions. Taking advantage of the livestreaming feature, “Los Blancos” posted a number of live videos on the day of the match.

The club also posted this Live moment of players arriving at the venue with a great first look at Bernabéu Stadium before fans packed the stands.

The 10x European Champions also tapped into another new product, 360 Video on Facebook, with stunning results. Check out this great moment from training as players pass by the 360-degree camera.

Team Frames for Profile Pictures

Real Madrid and Barcelona fans on Facebook got a new way to show their team spirit ahead of El Clásico with custom team frames for Facebook Profile Pictures. The two teams designed the frame overlays and then worked directly with the product team here at Facebook that announced new expression tools for Profiles in September.  Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos and Marcelo both participated, as did FC Barcelona.

To support their team ahead of the big match, fans could set a temporary version of their profile picture — with the new frame — and it would revert back to the previous profile picture at a specified time.

Celebrities Around the World #HalaMadrid

Facebook also helped Real Madrid tap into celebrity support from around the world. Brazilian footballer Marcelo, NBA and Warriors player Klay Thompson, and tennis pro Donna Vekic were among the public figures who donned t-shirts with the hashtag #HalaMadrid in support of their favorite team.

Players Behind the Scenes

Some of the stars on the field – Lionel MessiGerard Piqué, and Luis Suárez – gave their fans a glimpse into locker room celebrations.
